Calming a Reflux Baby: Gentle Steps and Safe Sleep
![]()
If your baby seems uncomfortable during or after a feeding, pause for a burp, offer a short break, and try feeding again when they are settled rather than urging them to finish. Smaller, more frequent feedings may help some babies, but keep meeting your baby’s feeding needs and ask your pediatrician before changing how much they eat.

After a feeding, hold your baby upright against your chest for about 20 to 30 minutes if you can, with their head and neck supported and their airway clear. Gentle cuddling is a better choice than bouncing or active play right after a meal, especially if movement seems to bring up more milk.

Reflux can look like ordinary spit-up, but persistent pain or feeding difficulties deserve an individual plan from your baby’s pediatrician. Before changing formula, thickening feeds, giving medication, or trying an over-the-counter remedy, ask what is appropriate for your baby’s age, feeding method, and symptoms.

Try a calm feeding with breaks for burping, then hold your baby upright while they’re awake after the meal. Continue placing them on their back for sleep, and contact your pediatrician if they remain uncomfortable or have trouble feeding.
Gripe water is not a reliable treatment for reflux, and ingredients vary between products. Ask your pediatrician before giving it to your baby, especially if symptoms are persistent or you’re considering it instead of a feeding or medical assessment.
