Baby Acid Reflux: When Symptoms Peak and What Helps
![]()
Baby reflux is often most noticeable around 4 months of age, when spit-up may be more frequent than it was in the first few weeks; it commonly improves as babies grow and spend more time upright, and many outgrow it by 12 to 18 months. For an individual baby, it can seem worst right after a feeding or when they are laid down soon afterward, especially if they have taken in a lot of milk or swallowed air.

If your baby is spitting up but otherwise seems comfortable and is growing well, try burping them during and after feeds, avoiding overfeeding, and holding them upright in your arms for about 20 to 30 minutes after a feeding. Keep sleep separate from that upright time: when your baby is ready to sleep, place them on their back on a firm, flat sleep surface, without a wedge, positioner, or raised mattress.

Baby Reflux Relief Checklist – Easy Digital Checklist for New Parents to Identify Baby Reflux Symptoms & Support Feeding, Sleep, and Comfort
Reflux deserves a conversation with your pediatrician if your baby seems to be in pain, regularly refuses feeds, has trouble gaining weight, or has symptoms that are getting worse rather than easing with time. Seek prompt medical advice for green or bloody vomit, forceful projectile vomiting, signs of dehydration, or breathing difficulties; these are not symptoms to manage with feeding adjustments alone.
Check the product’s listed specifications when evaluating when symptoms need a closer look.
Noting when your baby eats, spits up, sleeps, and seems uncomfortable can help you describe what is happening and whether changes to your routine make a difference. Our Baby Reflux Relief Checklist gives you a way to think through reflux symptoms alongside feeding, sleep, and comfort, while your pediatrician can help you decide what your baby’s pattern means.
Reflux commonly peaks at about 4 months old, though every baby’s pattern is different. It usually becomes less frequent as babies mature, with many improving substantially by their first birthday.
